Case Study: A Mountain Home Designed for Light, Built for Performance
There's a reason windows play such an important role in mountain architecture.
The view is part of the home.
For this Western North Carolina residence, the goal was to bring the surrounding landscape into everyday life with generous natural light and a refined, European-inspired aesthetic. But the windows also had to support something less visible: the performance standards behind a home certified for both ENERGY STAR and Indoor airPLUS.
That combination made the window package more than a design decision.
It had to help bring the architectural vision to life without asking the homeowners to choose between beauty, comfort and building performance.
Bringing the Mountains Into the Home
The home was built by Living Stone Design + Build, a Western North Carolina custom home builder with more than 30 years of experience and a strong emphasis on building science, energy efficiency and healthy-home construction. Living Stone's integrated approach brings architecture, design and construction together so decisions affecting the way a home looks and the way it performs can be considered together from the beginning.
That was especially important here.
Rather than treating the windows as openings to be filled later in the process, they became part of how the home relates to its setting. Large expanses of glass bring daylight deep into the interior while creating a stronger visual connection to the mountains beyond.

That early collaboration matters when glass plays such a large role in the architecture.
Window placement affects much more than the exterior elevation. It changes how morning light enters a bedroom, where furniture can sit, what catches your eye when you enter a room and how connected an interior feels to the landscape outside.
Throughout this home, those relationships help create spaces that feel bright without feeling stark and sophisticated without losing the warmth expected from a mountain residence.
The design allows the scenery itself to become part of the interior palette.
Performance Behind the View
A home designed around large windows also demands careful attention to performance.
Living Stone incorporates energy efficiency, healthy-home construction and building science into its custom homes, and this project achieved both ENERGY STAR and Indoor airPLUS certification.
