The American
Institute of Architects and the American Library Association recognized
the University of Oregon’s Allan Price Science Commons and Research Library as
one of seven projects worldwide to receive the 2017 AIA-ALA Library
Building Award.
The Price Science
Commons was designed by Opsis Architecture of Portland. Principle architect Jim
Kalvelage '81 noted that his team was inspired by school ties and a collaborative
spirit. Over the years, the need for the project had become increasingly
apparent. With a 72 percent surge in the number of UO science majors since
2000, the science library had undergone just one significant update in its
45-year life — two decades ago.
The science library
renovation and expansion was built by Andersen Construction. The Price Science
Commons and Research Library is part of the seven-branch UO Libraries system,
which is the state’s largest research library.
